Dive surveys between 2020 and 2022 recorded aggregations of up to 12 individuals, although the reason for those aggregations remains uncertain.

That uncertainty is important. It tells us that even well-known dive sites can still hold behaviours that researchers are working to understand. A diver may see a group of rays and think only of the beauty of the sighting. A researcher may see evidence of movement patterns, possible social behaviour, cleaning behaviour, seasonal influence or habitat use that still requires further investigation.

Shorthorned Pygmy Devil Rays and Cleaning-Station Behaviour

These rays have been recorded in the Greater Aliwal Shoal area throughout the year, and courtship behaviour was observed during recreational dives in November 2020 and January 2021. Mature females with mating scars and mature males were also observed at a cleaning station.

The cleaning-station detail is particularly significant. Shorthorned pygmy devil rays have been recorded aggregating at a cleaning station on the southern end of the Aliwal Shoal reef. Remote GoPro camera deployments between January 2021 and March 2022 recorded individuals at the site on 19 of 41 opportunistic deployments. The site has been described as only the second known cleaning station for this species in the world.

That is not a casual tourism detail. It places Aliwal Shoal into a more serious conservation and research context. A cleaning station is not just a place where an animal pauses. It is a behavioural site, a functional part of the reef and a place that may be important to the health and routine of the species using it.

For divers, this should change behaviour. A cleaning station should be approached with patience and distance. If animals are using the site, divers should avoid crowding, chasing, blocking movement or interrupting behaviour for a photograph. The best encounter is the one that allows the animal to continue naturally.

Manta Rays: Rare Encounters with Conservation Importance

Manta rays should be included carefully and responsibly in any article about Aliwal Shoal. They should not be marketed as a guaranteed feature of every dive. That would be misleading. However, the wider Aliwal Shoal area has recognised manta significance, including records of reef manta rays and oceanic manta rays.

The area has been identified as the only known aggregation site for oceanic manta rays in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Photo-identification records have included individuals resighted over a three-year period, with behaviours such as surface feeding and cleaning by bluestreak cleaner wrasse observed.

This makes manta rays part of the wider ecological importance of the shoal, even if many divers will never see one during a particular visit. When manta encounters do happen, they should be treated as meaningful wildlife observations rather than casual bonus sightings. A 2026 Marine Biology study examined turtle sightings from iSimangaliso and Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Areas using timed research surveys, citizen science and opportunistic sightings. Across the full study, 1,024 turtle sightings were recorded between September 2020 and August 2022, including green turtles, hawksbills, loggerheads and one leatherback.

On Aliwal Shoal specifically, timed research surveys recorded sightings of green turtles, hawksbills and loggerheads over 69.4 hours underwater, while citizen scientists reported further sightings over more than 100 dive trips. The study also found that green turtles, hawksbills and loggerheads were observed foraging year-round in both iSimangaliso and Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Areas. Some individuals showed site fidelity and long-term residency patterns.

This turns a turtle encounter into something more meaningful. A turtle seen on Aliwal Shoal may not simply be passing through. It may be using the reef as part of a longer-term foraging range. It may return to the same area repeatedly. It may be part of a pattern that researchers can identify through repeated sightings and records.

For divers, that should encourage respect. A turtle should never be chased, blocked, touched or forced to move for a photograph. If it is feeding, resting or swimming away, the correct response is to give it space.
